OnShift
Time tracking & workforce planning
Overview
From January 1, 2027, Belgian businesses will be required to register the working hours of their employees. Together with a fellow student, we started OnShift: an affordable and user-friendly platform specifically designed for small businesses. The project grew out of the course 'The Digital Startup' in our second year, which gave us a great passion for entrepreneurship. We went looking for a gap in the market and built a solution that allows small businesses to easily and affordably meet the upcoming legal obligation.
Key Features
- Employee time registration via a mobile app (React Native, Expo)
- Admin dashboard for overview, approval, and reporting
- Central GraphQL API on Java Spring Boot
- Cross-platform: web dashboard (Next.js) and mobile app (React Native, Expo)
- Designed for small businesses with a focus on simplicity and affordability
- Compliant with Belgian registration requirements from January 1, 2027
- Developed as a real startup, completely outside of school
Challenge
The two biggest challenges are working with new technologies - such as GraphQL and Java Spring Boot, which were completely new to us and that we largely had to learn ourselves - and working completely independently outside a school context, where we set our own deadlines and priorities without external guidance.
Solution
By embracing the freedom of a real entrepreneurial project: thoroughly learning new technologies before using them, setting clear internal agreements and deadlines as a duo, and creatively navigating obstacles when things don't go according to plan.
